In areas of West Africa, if a woman dies in childbirth, everyone assumes the child will die as well. Over the past 10 years, Estel and her helpers have been able to aid 2000 newborns get through their first year of life by giving milk formula to the grandmas and aunts who wanted to save the babies. Estel is thrilled that those children are now thriving with their families.
She and her helpers provide half of the milk formula needed for 148 newborns at the present time. The families provide the other half as they are able. Also provided are protein-enriched cereal for babies that range in age from six to twelve months old. The team Estel trained is raising 29 of these children. Some of them need school fees and all of them have occasional medical needs.
